Collectors and Lenders

This group of works has been brought together through the generosity of collectors, institutions, and galleries dedicated to preserving Emirati abstraction. Loans from the UAE Ministry of Culture, the Barjeel Art Foundation, and galleries including Aisha Al Abbar, Isabelle, Lawrie Shabibi, and Salwa Zeidan showcase the diversity of practices that have defined the movement. Their patronage ensures that Emirati abstraction, from pioneering figures to contemporary voices, continues to be celebrated and shared with wider audiences.

BFAF is honored to present Hour Eternal: 20 Years of Emirati Abstraction, an exhibition that celebrates the diverse and evolving practices of Emirati abstract art over the past two decades. This exhibition reflects on the duality of time—both fleeting and eternal—through the powerful lens of abstraction.

Featuring the works of pioneering artists such as Abdul Qader Al Rais, Najat Makki, and Hassan Sharif, Hour Eternal explores the intersection of tradition and modernity, revealing how abstract art has become a medium for examining identity, memory, and cultural transformation in the UAE. From expressive brushstrokes to geometric minimalism, the exhibition presents a wide spectrum of approaches to abstraction, each offering unique insights into the artists’ reflections on time, space, and heritage.

At the core of the exhibition is the exploration of how Emirati artists have redefined abstract art, incorporating influences from their local environment and global artistic movements. The featured works range from bold, expressive paintings to more contemplative studies in form and color, offering visitors a comprehensive view of the development of abstraction in the UAE.

We extend our deep appreciation to the artists, collectors, and institutions who contributed to this exhibition, including the UAE Ministry of Culture and Barjeel Art Foundation, whose support has enriched this celebration of Emirati artistic excellence.
