Bassam Freiha Art Foundation hosted a special artist-led tour with British contemporary artist Nat Bowen, marking the opening of her exhibition Chromology in the Annex Gallery.
Chromology offered a contemplative exploration of colour’s psychological and emotional impact. Known for her glossy, abstract resin works poured onto acrylic, Bowen created luminous, aqueous fields that transformed colour into a language of emotion and presence. Informed by the study of colour psychology, her practice merged material innovation with emotional depth, inviting viewers into a meditative encounter where colour became a catalyst for calm and reflection.
Through this guided tour, visitors had the opportunity to experience Chromology through the artist’s own perspective and gain insight into her creative process.
Nat Bowen is a British contemporary artist whose work is rooted in Chromology, the psychological and emotional study of colour. Her practice explores how colour can act as a form of non-verbal communication, eliciting physical and emotional responses shaped by the viewer’s perception and lived experience.
Bowen works primarily with pigmented epoxy resin, which she pours and layers onto acrylic surfaces using a slow, meditative process. The resulting abstract compositions are luminous and responsive to light, reflecting and absorbing their surroundings. Her creative process encourages detachment from technology and a return to mindfulness, which she extends to the viewer through her immersive works.
Her interest in rare and meaningful pigments has led her to incorporate materials such as pure Lapis Lazuli from Afghanistan, volcanic earth from Iceland, and meteorite dust over 4 billion years old. She is also known for sculptural resin works embedded with crushed diamonds, including Black Diamond and Pink Diamond.
Bowen studied at London College of Fashion, where she created fashion collections using her own manipulated artworks as textiles. This background informs her approach to material, surface, and presentation. In 2021, she relocated her studio to Dubai, where she continues to develop her practice and international collaborations.
