Description

Join us for an immersive hands on jewellery making workshop exploring the traditional art of cuttlefish casting with Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi. Rooted in centuries old craftsmanship, this technique uses cuttlebone, the natural internal shell of the cuttlefish, as a mold for casting molten silver, resulting in organic textures and distinctive forms.

Guided by Azza Al Qubaisi, participants will learn the complete process, from designing and carving their own cuttlebone mold to preparing it for casting. The workshop then moves outdoors, where participants will experience the process of pouring silver firsthand and gain insight into the materiality, precision, and expressive potential of this historic method. Working with 925 silver and natural cuttlebone, participants are encouraged to experiment with texture, form, and personal expression.

Each participant will create and take home a finished piece such as a pendant, a bracelet element, or a small sculptural form, shaped entirely by their own design choices. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn an authentic casting technique directly from one of the UAE’s pioneering jewellery artists, while engaging deeply with the relationship between tradition, material, and contemporary practice.
